I'd seen him as Shylock in the film version of The Merchant of Venice, and had heard that Looking for Richard was as much about him trying to reconnect people with the plays of Shakespeare as it was about performing the play Richard III on film. Risky. It could have been very "worthy" and a bit reverential and remote from a modern audience, but it is utterly fantastic. The film follows Pacino's creative journey as he tries to get "under the skin" of Richard III and it features script readings, impromptu rehearsals in the street with a great cast of American and British actors, lots of off-the-cuff humour and performances of snippets of the play in full costume. Make no mistake, though. This isn't an American actor trying to be Laurence Olivier or something he isn't.

The many, many layers are so artfully woven in this piece. The acting is wonderful. The documentary conversation is wonderful. Pacino is beautiful; he's both brilliant and humble. I enjoyed how the documentary format allows the viewer to see how Pacino can be a complete goof, loafing around with friends while walking down the street but then he'll pull in, impromptu, go into character, and hugely fill the space - I think they call it Presence. While I understand his love of Shakespeare, to not do more deeper research into the text is haphazard playmaking. The brilliance of Shakespeare is that everything is there. To change the "G" to a "C" because you have not actually gotten the twist of the prophecy ("G" is for Gloucester and the prophecy was true), or that, in subtly manipulating the "G" into "George" for his brother the king, Pacino also missed the evil (and cunning) of Richard is so sad.

But, if you like Pacino and are interested in the playmaking process, this is a good enough film. I just wouldn't use it as a serious teaching tool. Al Pacino and his crew delves into both the characters in the play, and what relevance it has to today's world. One of the most fun parts of this is Al Pacino himself, playing Richard III and trying to find and show the world meaning behind the bard's words. I certainly never expected Pacino to embrace and be passionate about Shakespeare, but he throws himself into it like everything else he has done, and lends his personality to it. He plays it with complete integrity, from the heart, and is in full command of the character. For me the high point of his portrayal of Richard is the soliloquy (piece to camera) before the battle of Bosworth, which is quite stunning.
